Project proposal:

"A Game of Visual Telephone"

-telling a 3-part story in 3 weeks!

-in different ways!

-and in different mediums!

My Idea for this project:

A 3-part or 3-act story...beginning-middle-end.

Ex: Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl in the end...

I want to do a exquisite corpse of an idea...and give everyone a start with this project and see where we all eventually end up taking it.

Sorta think of it like a game of visual Telephone! :D

The only requirements for this project would be that:

A.) it has to be a 3-part story.

B.) it has to be an original story!

C.) it has to include fire and water (an everyday object/thing that is commonly used, yet abstract and open enough for a variety of interpretations.)

I want to try and propose a project that does the following 3 things:

1. everyone would enjoy doing it (despite differences in majors, and or interests in general)

2. the project itself can be approached in a variety of different ways creatively and in different mediums

3. has everyone in a group to working hand-in-hand, side by side together

My idea/inspiration for this project comes from the premise behind the "48-hr Film Festival", in that they give you a set amount of time and certain requirements that you must meet, (like a certain genre, character name, line of dialogue, or an object that must be included in the film, etc.) yet they allow you to take it in any other direction you see fit.

But instead of it being 48-hrs, we have 3 weeks to do this project! :D

Most of us tell a story with our art, we try to communicate something with each piece we create...whether it be through our films, animations, or our photographs...

We all communicate something! We all tell a story!

What I would need:

I want to do a film/video for this project; but I want to take the same story, and like a game of telephone, tell it in different ways!

I want the same story told, but in different mediums…one part of the story told with film/video (being live action), another part told with animation, and another told with photography!

In the end I want a combination of the 3 art forms put together in creating an interesting 3-part story!

So I would need most likely...like 9 people or so!

1. A Director

2. A Writer

3. 2 Video & Editing

4. 2 Photographers

5. 1 Audio (Person for audio/sound in all three parts)

6. 2 Animators

So I had to pick a final video out of the three edited ones I posted so...I figured I like round numbers and the 3rd one I guess is the one with the most change...so yea! Lucky number 3 it is! ;D Woohoo!

Project Hiroshi Hayakawa (Week 4)

So, it's the final week for "Project Hiroshi Hayakawa"...

And I'M DONE!!! >:D

And what I have for you all this week is the end product of all my hard work and strenuous endeavors...

Here are the fruits of my labor!

I present to you all my final film! -"Figure as Landscape".

I have posted/uploaded 3 different edited versions of my video (this is partly due to the fact that I could not make up my mind and decide which one to pick...so I'm putting them all up!)

1st -

This one is the original version and shows a before landscape/full body, and an after landscape/full body where the cityscape is shown destroyed at the end. :)

2nd-

After having Charlotte take a look at what I had in my video Tuesday during class, she thought it be best to cut some things down and maybe not go with a second reveal like the cut out at the end to the full body/landscape with the destroyed city on top.

3rd-

In this edited version, I cut the ending shots of the full body completely.

I don't know which one I really like out of the three, but they all seem to work differently and uniquely in their own way.

In the end...

:) I really enjoyed this project as a whole, because it gave me a bit more practice and experience both behind the camera and with editing in Final Cut Pro. It also gave me some experience thinking abstractly, and on my feet. I had to figure out a concept/idea for this project which took a lot of planning and brainstorming on my part, and also I had to figure out what to do about the lighting/silhouetted forms with the screen.

Also, it was a test of my pre-planning and organizational skills (my very limited skills that is for the most part) in general. I had to stay on top of what I needed to do each week to progress the project. Also, I had to construct the cut-outs and small parts/segments of the project before I could even start filming. Another key part of this project I had to stay on top of was documentation, and making sure I showed each little part, and every progress I made throughout the duration of "Figure as Landscape".

I really liked working on this project; and I really liked experimenting and trying new things.

Overall I have to say I'm pretty satisfied and pleased with the outcome of this project.

(The only thing that I had a problem with was Blogger being a pain in the ass not wanting to upload my videos >:L and of course being a cheap art student without internet at her apartment lol...><" therefore I'm stuck posting on the campus computers in the wee hours of the morning, and running into these problems :l...yeeppp...lesson learned never ever do this shit last minute!)

And with all this being said...I can't wait to move on to the next one! >;P

Onward to the next project, the next creation, the next Design for Media...

ADVENTURE!!! >;D lol

Project Hiroshi Hayakawa (Week 3)

Last week, I posted some brainstorming and composition sketches I had done for this project. After toying around with several of the compositions and some different ideas; I began making the cut-outs, and planning the set up for the final video shoot.

This week what I have for you, are some cut-outs I did for the cityscape.

I set them up in a cute little city scene on top of Bristol board and took some pictures.

(Just so I personally could see for myself how each one of the cut-outs looked when placed together. :P )

In the end the cut-outs will be taped and placed on a human body/form and set up in a different way; but the change in the placement I hope will be a little one at the most.

This week I just wanted to make sure I had stuff built; and began the process/set up for filming.

Furthermore, I’m considering sticking only to the cityscape composition, due to the fact that I feel it’s the most interesting and dynamic of the three I did; though I did implement aspects of the others into it such as the trees for example.

I got together my cut-outs, my model/actress/human landscape (/poor unfortunate victim that has to lay on the floor half-naked as I tape tiny little houses, and trees to their body...); and so I got all this together and began to set up with the screen, some good 'ole fashioned duck-tape, a lamp (with some pretty extreme intense lighting), and I got down to work! >;D

Here are some photo's of my model without the cut-outs on her...sort of trying different poses for fun, and seeing the twist/turn of the body...in the end though I thought it was better I just stick with the initial pose I had planned on.

(Though my human landscape did look pretty cool compositionally all twisty and whatnot. :3)

(And yes that is a duck-taped lamp on my wall >.>" yeeepp...I was trying to see/make sure the cut-out's themselves would be able to show up through the screen...in the end I did the smart thing and borrowed a high-powered desk lamp, one with a bendable neck...problem solved! And no more silly stupidity on my part! lol)

So...I leave you with this...thank God for duck-tape, strong light bulbs in lamps with bendable necks, and gorgeous patient half-naked models! :D

Project Hiroshi Hayakawa (Week 2)

As I said before in my last post, my idea/aim for this project is to show footage of silhouetted human figures, in a series of close ups on the body, depicting landscapes. The body itself will have several varying cut-out forms placed on top of, behind, or perhaps even around it; in order to create the illusion of a landscape. It will be subtle and hopefully not obvious that the cut-outs are placed on a human figure; and the figure itself I'm still debating whether to plan on it being shown (through panning the camera out so you can see the whole figure), or whether I ought to keep it a mystery and cut the reveal entirely by keeping the figure hidden.

If all goes well and I have it the way I planned/intended it to be, in the close ups on the figure it should look like the various scenes/landscapes I created.

Here are some rough (and I mean rough!) sketches I did in Photoshop on the cintiq's in the labs. I basically did theses for ideas on the types of landscapes/compositions and positions I wanted the body to be in. The sketches as a whole were part of my brainstorming and planning for this project.

The second set of sketches I have are examples of compositions/shots I hope to do for the final portion of the project (or rather a rough idea for the set up/composition that might be subject to some minor change here and there).

I basically narrowed done some of my initial ideas I had in the brainstorming part of my sketches. Once I narrowed down which ones I particularly liked and thought looked appealing I went in and furthered those ideas, elaborated on and refined them.

So, basically here it is some of my planning/developmental sketches! I know lots of planning and testing so far for this project :L...but all good things take planning! >:D

Project Hiroshi Hayakawa

For my project/Project Hayakawa, I'm thinking of working with abstract figures in landscape; inspired by Hayakawa's photography work. I want to start this post off by talking about some of the sources of inspiration I had for this project; I was inspired definitely by shadow puppets/silhouettes', and also the aforementioned photography of Hayakawa was a source of inspiration, I was also inspired by a film (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari) we watched in class during our Round Robin's Tuesday and the various lighting/ different kinds of abstract landscapes and sets present within the film.

Now! To the actual project nitty-gritty details!

I plan on shooting video footage for this project; and using silhouette body/shadows in a series of close-ups to create the illusion of a landscape. Moreover, I hope to achieve this very illusion through the use of created sets (small houses, trees, etc.) that I will set up on top of or behind and over the body; that will act as shadow puppets or props in a way to really make it look like a landscape at first glance. It will only be by panning the camera out will we see the full figure in its entirety. In the projects finality I hope to have some kind of footage that showcases this in a unique and clever sort of way.

This is basically some test footage, just to see how the lighting would work so I can figure out the shadows and everything; I'm also considering possibly going into final cut pro and creating silhouettes' using a video effect and some editing techniques that a friend told me about. Considering how well shitty the test footage of the shadows is looking with the screen, I think I might go with the latter idea of using final cut/video edits to achieve the desired look and feel I have for this project.

All in all this project will give me a great opportunity to fully utilize my video camera, and some editing software; hopefully improving my skills in both. :D

The test footage kind of blows, but that's why it's a test! >:O It's sort of just for me so I can figure out what the hell I'm doing and different ways of going about it.

On the dreamer/doer spectrum I'm probably more of a dreamer than anything else, though a dreamer with some aspects and traits of a doer.

More than often, like a dreamer I get these elaborate and over the top crazy brilliant ideas into my head; ideas that always seem to fall short of what it was suppose to be. My ideas are ones that at the time I'm super excited and jazzed about, but sadly end up not fully reaching. However, I never seem to really abandon the idea fully, I merely adapt it or rather mutate the initial idea in order to finish it to completeness.

In short, it's always better in my head than anywhere else.

The areas of Media Arts I'm looking to really delve into are really any of them I hope. However, I definitely have an intense interest and desire to focus more on the film part of it all. In particular I'm looking towards more illustrative cinematic stuff/work. I have really only a background in illustration/doing illustrative work; so I'm looking forward to jumping in and learning something completely new and foreign to me.

I've never really worked with any animation, or done much photography or film work before, but I would definitely like to. I want my areas of expertise to be varied and diverse. I want to be a "Jack of all Trades", but a master of none really, and be equally or at least adeptly skilled at a variety of them. I love experimenting with different mediums, and trying new things.

My goals in general for this course are to learn/experiment with different types of Media Arts, especially film to which I'm completely and utterly in the dark about. I hope to combine what I already know and have skill wise in illustration with film, and more. I love film, I love telling stories and entertaining, so I guess if I could in some way do that I will have accomplished in some way or another what I set out to do.

Past Work:

This is a digital piece I did last semester in my digital illustration class, it's all done in Adobe Illustrator. The project was to create a cultural motif, with only a limited set of colors used. I chose India/Hinduism and did the image of Lakshmi- Goddess of Love & Beauty.

This is a video and the first video really I've ever done. I did it as my final project for my digital illustration class. The project was to take a fairytale, folklore, or legend and sort of retell or show it through the use of cut paper. To which I did a video of a modernization of "Bluebeard" with cut paper puppets for my final project.
